For the third year in a row, the ODEON Theatre hosts the Hungarian Theatre Festival – BukFeszt (September 30 – October 6, 2024).
The festival is an initiative of the Association of Hungarian Theatres – MASZIN, in collaboration with UNITER. The five member theatres of the Association that will present performances in the Majestic Hall of the ODEON are: the “Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theatre in Timişoara, the “Szigligeti” Theatre in Oradea, the “Harag György” Troupe of the Northern Theatre in Satu Mare, the “Csíki Játékszín” Theatre in Miercurea Ciuc and the “Tomcsa Sándor” Theatre in Odorheiu Secuiesc.
The selected shows of the 3rd edition are thematically varied. From prose to contemporary dance, from contemporary Hungarian and American texts to classics of universal literature, there will be performances for all tastes, and those who will watch the entire Festival’s program will be able to get an overview of the recent repertoire of Hungarian theatres in Romania.

On Monday, September 30, at the opening of the BukFeszt Festival, the public is invited, starting 7 p.m., in the Majestic Hall to see the drama “10” by Szekely Csaba, directed by Rusznyak Gabor, a production of “Tomcsa Sándor” Theatre in Odorheiu Secuiesc.
The Misanthrope, or the Showcase Under Construction
Tuesday, 1st of October, from 6:00 PM, in the Majestic Hall, you will be able to see “The Misanthrope, or the Showcase Under Arrangement” by Molière, directed by Sardar Tagirovsky, performed by the “Harag Gyorgy” Company of the Northern Theatre in Satu Mare. The director is already known to the festival’s loyal audience since its first edition, as the director of the show “Rasputin” based on the text by Géza Szocs.
The Threepenny Opera
Thursday, October 3, in the Majestic Hall, starting at 7:00 PM, the “Csíki Játékszín” Theatre from Miercurea Ciuc will perform the show “The Threepenny Opera” by Bertolt Brecht, directed by Szocs Artur.
Silvia
On Friday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m., the artists coming from Oradea invite us to “Silvia” by Kalman Imre, the Hungarian operetta known all over the world. The show is directed by Novak Eszter, the artistic director of the Szigligeti Theatre in Oradea, and the show will be performed in the Majestic Hall.
The Doctor
The Festival will end with the performance of “Csiky Gergely” Hungarian State Theatre in Timişoara, “The Doctor”, directed by Andrei Şerban. Robert Icke’s play is being staged for the first time in Romania and will be performed on October 6, at 7:00 PM, in the Majestic Hall.
All the performances in the Festival will have Romanian subtitles.

Founded in 2017, the MASZIN Association aims to promote interethnic dialogue and also to increase the visibility in Bucharest of Hungarian-language performances produced outside the capital. The organisers want to present defining performances for Hungarian-language theatre in Romania in front of professionals in the field and the audience in Bucharest, of all ethnicities.
The festival partners are: the Department for Interethnic Relations(DRI), the Romanian Theatre Union (UNITER), theLiszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center, the Embassy of Hungary in Romania, the Odeon Theatre and the Metropolis Theatre.
