An hour before the doors open of the ruinous multi-purpose venue where they are performing tonight, Santi and Rosó will discover that they don’t like music. They don’t like working in music, they don’t like listening to it. They hate the idea of “being musicians” but they can’t leave it alone either. “Know what the worst thing is about the crisis of being in your forties? That it’s a repeat of the crisis of being in your thirties. You have the same doubts, the same fears… But you’re ten years older.”
What most interests me in theatre – now and ever since I started out – is the encounter, the meeting: the co-existence of a group organised by unknown people in a determined space and time. It is a meeting without long-term objectives, without any future summons: the agenda goes no further than the darkness and the applause. However, nobody knows which of these meetings will unleash the next revolution. Every night at the theatre – I like to think of it like this – configures an ephemeral political movement.
I write comedies because I am not optimistic. I believe in the sense of humour as the only viable alternative to optimism. My plays are always autobiographical, but I never realise that until months after I have written them.
Joan Yago
Joan Yago was born in Barcelona in 1987. He holds a degree in Directing and Playwriting from the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona. He is the author of the following plays: Entrevistes breus amb dones excepcionals, Fairfly, You say tomato (2016 Serra d’Or Prize), Un Lloc Comú (2014 Ciutat d’Alzira Prize), Bluf (2014 Quim Masó Prize), Sobre el fenomen de les feines de merda, Aneboda, La Nau dels Bojos (2012 Adrià Gual Prize), L’Editto Bulgaro, Martingala, No sóc Dean Moriarty o Feísima enfermedad y muy triste muerte de la reina Isabel I (2010 Escènia Prize). He is a founding member of the La Calòrica company.
Radu Iacoban (born in 1982) is an actor, director and playwright.
He graduated the Acting section in 2005, the MA in acting in 2007 and MA in theatre direction in 2017 at UNATC Bucharest.
He wrote the following plays, which he also directed: Carpathian Garden (2013), Box Fm (2014), In the park (2014) at Godot Cafe Teatru, The house with the cats (2015) at Little Theatre, After Hours (2016) at National Theatre, Emancipation (2016) at Comedy Theatre, Politik.on (2016) at Point, The trial of the goat with one goatling (2017) at Metropolis Theatre. He directed at Green Hours – Pounding nails in the floor with my forehead by Eric Bogosian (2011), at Godot Cafe Teatru – This is our youth de Kenneth Lonergan (2012), at Act Theatre – An Intervention by Mike Bartlett (2016 ) and Constelation by Nick Payne (2018), at Jewish State Theatre t – Lobby Hero by Kenneth Lonergan (2017), at unteatru – The Servant by Harold Pinter (2017), at Little Theatre – The Life and Death of Richard II based on W. Shakespeare (2018), at Clasic Theatre ”Ioan Slavici” in Arad – The Father by Florian Zeller (2018), at ”Maria Filotti” Theatre, Brăila – The Bold Soprano by Eugène Ionesco (2018) and at the National Theatre in Iași – Marjorie Prime by Jordan Harrison (2019).
Fabulamundi Playwriting Europe: Beyond Borders? is a cooperation project among theatres, festivals and cultural organizations from 10 EU Countries (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Romania, Austria, Belgium, UK, Poland and Czech Republic). The network aims to support and promote the contemporary playwriting across Europe, in order to reinforce and enhance the activities and strategies of the professionals and artists working in the sector and to provide the theatre authors and professionals with opportunities of networking, multicultural encounter and professional development.
In the frame of this project, at Odeon Theatre has presented between 2012 – 2016 eight reading performances from the dramaturgy of all the partner countries. The translated plays were published in 2015 and 2016 in the volumes Italian contemporary drama and European contemporary drama, at Cheiron Publishing House and Cultural Foundation „Camil Petrescu”.
Kepler-438b was the first performance produced within this project, followed in 2018 by Gardenia by Elzbieta Chowaniec, directed by Zoltán Balázs (Hungary).
