With this beckettian call to creativity that is being born from failure, from an apparent difficulty or simply from the human nature, the performance Gala of the French choregrapher Jérôme Bel continues his worldly tour at Bucharest. One of the creations that shifted the audience perception on contemporary dance and of his own body is presented by The National Dance Center Bucharest (CNDB) and The French Institute, on 13 and 14 December at Odeon Theatre inside the international programme FranceDanse Orient Express 2017. The first show in Bucharest will be introduced by CNDB Prizes 2017.
A movement workshop for amateurs in the Parisian region – starting from this French experience in 2014, Jérôme Bel questions dance in all its forms, from the dance steps in the living room, in the intimacy of its own house to the institutionalized one, with theatrical rules, on a real stage. Why has the last one legitimacy or another authority then the first? What does dance and movement mean for each of us? All these questions, very simple at first sight, were asked by the choreographer for the audience and to the 20 Romanian dancers with whom he worked for the Bucharest version of the performance. A surprizing cast fighting against all clichés on dance and theatre, reuniting actors, ballet and professional dancers, but also common people that you would have never seen on a real stage – children, teenagers, elders, handicaped people etc. Together, this team presents and deconstructs models and accepted ballet and contemporary dance canons, sometimes with shyness, mistakes and clumsiness, but also breaking and overcoming limits. A collective work that aims to underline the political and social dimension of dance, its capacity to serve as a bond inside an ephemeral community.
A gala is usually a common place for theatrical experience: a festive and collective occasion, from performances at the end of the year and amateur performances to fancy events. Reinvented by Jérôme Bel, it already travelled in thousands of countries through three continents because of its flexible, mobile format and accesible for everyone. All over the place, the performance made a novel inventory for dance. The result is a community already impressed by performers, Gala which assimilated different movement and reconsidered dance. It’s Romanians’ moment to make room in this fragmented gala, a patchwork of images and reflection, a living portrait gallery.
